New Balance 9060 vs 2002R vs 550: Which to Buy

Short answer: Buy the 9060 if you want the chunkiest, most cushioned New Balance and a modern silhouette. Buy the 2002R if you want the same ABZORB comfort in a slimmer, more traditional running shape, and the Protection Pack version if you like the distressed look. Buy the 550 if you want a flat, low-profile leather court shoe rather than a running shoe. We currently stock the 9060 and the 2002R; the 204L is our low-profile alternative while the 550 is out of stock.
Where does each model come from?
9060. Released in 2022, the 9060 is a new design rather than a reissue. It borrows the shape of New Balance’s 99X running series, the 990 family, and exaggerates it with a sculpted, wavy midsole and a layered suede and mesh upper. It is the model most responsible for New Balance’s current popularity with younger buyers.
2002R. The 2002 was a premium running shoe from 2010, built on the 860 series outsole with ABZORB cushioning and N-ergy in the heel. New Balance brought it back as the 2002R, and the Protection Pack series, with its deliberately cut and layered suede, became the most recognisable version. The Rain Cloud colourway we stock is part of that series.
550. The 550 is a basketball shoe from 1989 that New Balance revived in 2020. It is a simple leather low-top with a flat sole and a perforated toe, and it has become the brand’s answer to the Nike Dunk and the Air Force 1.
Which is the most cushioned?
The 9060 and the 2002R both use ABZORB, New Balance’s foam and rubber blend that absorbs impact in the heel and forefoot. The 9060 has more of it and sits higher off the ground, so it feels the softest and the most supportive over a long day on your feet. The 2002R is a little firmer and closer to the ground, which many people prefer for walking because it feels more stable. The 550 has very little cushioning: it is a court shoe with a thin foam insole, and it feels flat and firm, much like a Dunk. That is part of its appeal, but if comfort is your first concern it is the wrong choice of the three.
How does New Balance sizing compare with Nike?
New Balance shoes are generally roomier than Nike shoes in the same size, particularly across the forefoot, and the brand builds many models on wider lasts. In practice:
- The 9060 runs generous. If you take a UK 9 in Nike, you will usually be comfortable in a UK 9 in the 9060, and some people with narrow feet go down half a size.
- The 2002R is true to size, with a slightly snug forefoot on the Protection Pack versions because of the layered suede. Take your Nike size.
- The 550 is true to size, with a roomier toe than a Dunk. Take your Nike size.
All our listings use UK sizes, which Indian sizing follows. Our UK, US and EU size guide explains the conversion if you are used to the US sizing printed on Nike boxes.

Which New Balance should you buy?
For most people the 9060 is the easiest recommendation: it is the most comfortable, it comes in the widest choice of colourways, and the grey and black options go with everything. Pick the 2002R if the 9060 looks too heavy for your wardrobe or you want the Protection Pack texture. If you are set on a flat, clean leather shoe, the 550 is the New Balance to wait for, and in the meantime the 204L gives you a low-profile New Balance at a lower price.
